Founded in 1913, the Durham Colored Library served Durham’s Black community during segregation and became a gathering place for learning, reading, and community life in the Hayti neighborhood.

Inspired by this legacy, Saving Our Stories records oral histories that document Black life in Durham across generations. The interviews capture the experiences of educators, civic leaders, artists, professionals, and longtime residents whose lives reflect the neighborhoods and institutions that shaped the city, from Hayti and Hillside High School to the businesses of Parrish Street.

The project is part of DCL at Duke, an initiative housed at the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Duke University, and developed in collaboration with partners including the Museum of Durham History and the Durham County Library North Carolina Collection.
